Greg Smith is the President and CEO of Smith & Associates, LLC.  His areas of expertise include project management, construction management, project controls and risk assessment.  Greg is an internationally recognized schedule risk expert with published work.   He comes from a very diverse 30+ year background including experiences in the construction, manufacturing, engineering, and research businesses in the nuclear power, petroleum, chemical, fossil power, defense, aeronautics and aerospace industries.

Smith & Associates has been active in projects around the globe including the USA, Canada, El Salvador, West Africa, France, South Korea, and Australia.  Greg recently completed an assignment as project manager for a 4 year, $3 billion project in northwestern Iowa to design and build a combined Ammonia and Urea facility.

Greg has been invited to speak in a number of international and domestic venues for such organizations as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the French Aviation and Aeronautics Association (AAAF or 3AF), the Project Management Institute (PMI), the Australian College of Performance Management (CPM), the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE), and the Society of Cost Estimators and Analysts (SCEA). Greg is also a highly-sought after instructor, actively participating in NASA’s prestigious Academy of Program, Project, and Engineering Leadership (APPEL), NASA MSFC’s Program Planning and Control (PP&C) curriculum courses, and Old Dominion University’s Professional Certificate Program (Systems Engineering – Reed Integration, Inc.). 

Prior to becoming a business owner, Greg was the Project Management Group Lead for a large support contractor working at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, where he was presented with the Silver Snoopy Award from the Astronaut’s Office for significant contributions to manned space flight programs.  Before that, he was the Manager of Project Controls for the office of an international engineering and construction firm with projects around the world.  Leading to this assignment, Greg spent almost a decade of work with another international engineering and construction company, in a number of geographic locations and positions. 

Before entering the private sector, Greg served in the US Navy in the Nuclear Power Program in a variety of roles.  His specialties included mechanical operation and maintenance, chemistry and radiological controls, and supervision of integrated plant operations.  He also served a tour as an instructor at a joint Department of Energy (DOD) / Department of Defense (DOD) facility that performed nuclear research and trained personnel in nuclear theory, operation, and maintenance.  While serving in the US Navy, he received a letter of appreciation for participation in a DOD Low Observables Symposium, a Letter of Commendation, the Meritorious Good Conduct Award, and the National Defense Medal for service during the Persian Gulf War.

Greg received a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts degree in August 2001 from Excelsior College, a member of the University of the State of New York, with additional studies in nuclear engineering and technology areas.  He has also completed course work in welding engineering.

Professional associations include involvement as a former chairperson of a Safety Committee, former member of a Charity Committee, and an ISO 9001:2000 certified internal auditor.  Greg’s extracurricular and community involvement includes membership and participation in the Microsoft Project Association (MPA), the National Arbor Day Foundation, Alabama Family Rights Association (ALFRA), and the Madison County High School (MCHS) Cheer Booster Club (a.k.a. the Tiger Spirit Club).  Greg is married and has five children and six grandchildren with whom he enjoys spending time hiking, swimming, playing basketball, golfing, kayaking, and other activities.
